Renewal of vows and naming ceremonies

To discuss or book a renewal of vows or naming ceremony please contact Blackpool registration service on 01253 477177 or email: ceremonies@blackpool.gov.uk

Renewal of vows ceremonies are intended for couples who have married or formed civil partnerships and who wish to renew their vows to each other.

A naming ceremony is a way for parents to celebrate and welcome a child or children into the family.

Reasons to celebrate with a renewal of vows ceremony

  • A special anniversary
  • You were married or formed a civil partnership abroad and you would like to renew your vows in a ceremony held for family and friends
  • You have been through a period of strain in your relationship and you wish to celebrate your renewed commitment to each other

The ceremony

The ceremony is tailor made to suit you. Your ceremony could take the following format:

  • Introduction and welcome
  • Acknowledgement of any children of the marriage or partnership
  • Reading
  • Renewal of vows
  • Rededication of ring(s)
  • Giving of new ring(s) or gift(s)
  • Words from a previous wedding or civil partnership guest
  • Signing of a commemorative certificate
  • Closing words

Renewal of vows ceremonies have no legal status. If you would like more information, contact us on ceremonies@blackpool.gov.uk or call 01253 477177.

Reasons to celebrate with a naming ceremony

Naming ceremonies give you the opportunity to:

  • Celebrate the birth of your child and to commemorate their naming
  • Welcome an adopted child or step-children into your family
  • Express commitment to the child. The parent or parents pledge their care and love to their child in front of family and friends
  • Enable relatives and guests to meet and welcome the newest member of the family
  • Appoint mentors or supporting adults - a bit like nominating godparents. Family and friends can promise their help and support to the child as he or she grows up within their community
  • Give grandparents the opportunity to make promises to support the parents in the raising of their new grandchild

A naming ceremony differs to a traditional christening because the main focus is not religion instead it is the child and their family.  It gives parents the opportunity to gather with family and friends to welcome their child into the family. When a child enters your life a new family begins, and that is something worth celebrating.

Every naming ceremony is unique and tailor made to suit you and can be organised by any parent or guardian. Parents do not need to be married to each other. Naming ceremonies have no legal status and cannot be used to officially change your child's name.
